Hello and welcome back to the blog on my website! Today's update features everything I completed this past October of 2023, and boy it's quite a bit!! Seven faceups and four sets of hands.
This blog entry is special as it features my 600th faceup, and I am just so proud of my progress the last 12 years since I've started painting dolls. Basically I average 50 faceups a year at this rate, though my faceup output has definitely decreased the past couple of years, as I've taken on a lot of body aesthetic commissions as well. I will post about that though in December when I wrap up this year.
Either way, today I will share a Fairyland RealFee Toki and a Coco, a Resinsoul Ai, a Telesthesia Doll XunYiChao, a Smart Doll Chaos G07 head, a Fairyland Feeple60 Mirwen with 2 sets of hands, a set of Fairyland Minifee hands, and a Doll Leaves Theresa along with a pair of her hands.
Onto some pictures and ramblings under the break!
First up is the Fairyland RLF Toki in natural skin, who, along with her sister Coco shown below, is a mischievious little pixie. Her body is still being painted, but that'll be shared at the beginning of December.
Next up we have a Fairyland RLF Coco in natural skin who is also a cute little pixie like her sister above. I worked on them at the same time to keep them as similar as I could despite different facial features.
Now this is my very special faceup, #600! Of course it had to be on my Resinsoul Ai, who had been my first resin BJD back in June of 2011. Those who are new to my body of work, welcome to my site, I repaint this doll every 99 faceups to always be my 100th since the last time I painted her.
She had been my first faceup, which I'd completed in September of 2011 after getting a sort of one on one workshop with a faceup artist friend who also hooked me into the hobby in the first place. This is the 7th time I've painted her over all.
Let me show a quick comparison of her last faceup to her current one:
The doll is mellowed to a grey-ivory tone and back in the day normal skin was called fleshtone by Resinsoul. I always do the faceup with the same theme, as to track my improvement over the years. I change some details up slightly, but overall she always has blue and white eyeshadow, blue swirls, blue-pink ombre lips, and white eyebrows and eyelashes.
This time I also strictly used acrylics for her eyebrows and painted eyelashes, which I am still getting the hang of using. Overall I am pleased with how she turned out!
Following such a milestone faceup we have another one done for myself on a Telesthesia and Dragon Doll XunYiChao in dark tan skin. I always wanted a dark tan doll from TD Doll, and I finally bit the bullet and ordered this one to be one of my more recent characters named Cari who can literally turn into a polar bear on command. Hence why I wanted her to have dark skin, but pale hair, just like a polar bear.
Dark resins are always a fun challenge to work on as the pastels won't show truly until you seal. So what looks bright at first, will mute way down once sealed in. Good thing I have a fair bit of experience with dark resins at this point. Also she felt incomplete without the piercings, so I'm glad I added some.
To return to commission work, I would like to show this Smart Doll Chaos G07 head in cocoa skin. Since she is a chaos head, I had to cut off the pour-spout-ring from the back of the head, and cut the eyes open. Opening the eyes was the bigger challenge, even with a brand new precision exacto blade in hand. But I won, and the eyes are pretty even.
She is an alt head for the client as I painted a V01 chaos head a year ago roughly. I tried to keep them as similar as possible with the painting style, but I do feel that I was successful!
Then here we have a very fun and challenging faceup on a Fairyland F60 Mirwen in natural skin along with a set of 17 hands, and a #13 right and #16 left hand respectively. Yes, the teeth glow in the dark!
The head had a very sweet and pretty faceup upon arrival, but sadly chipped. It was stubborn to remove, especially the lips, but I wish I'd taken pics of it before wiping it just to show how different she now looks!
The skeletal jaw illusion looks best from the side, but the teeth are the right amount and in the right spots, it's just difficult to keep the front looking slim enough as Fairyland heads tend to be rather round. No matter, I'm very proud of this faceup!
I also painted a pair of Fairyland MNF #9 hands in natural skin. I do enjoy blushing hands, though painting the nails was a bit of a pain due to how small they are on these hands...
And last, but certainly not least, we got the Doll Leaves Theresa and her hands in normal skin. I was given a lot of freedom within the parameters, so I went ham with the fantasy aspects. The client wanted her ice themed, and embellished with gems, which I was happy to do. She truly is a striking and very shimmery/shiny faceup.
As for the FYI, I will be raising my prices beginning of December again. I honestly way undercharge for my experience, skill level, and time. Existing commissions that arrive before December are exempt from the price increase. Thanks for understanding and your continued support!
Also, thank you for reading, and until next time!
