Hello and welcome to the new year of 2024! I hope everyone had a good slide and 2024 is gentle on all of you.
December was a light month in regards to doll customization, as I had no commissions at that time (nor since yet), so I repainted some of my own dolls. Both dolls are new additions to my collection that I bought secondhand from a dear local friend. One I had no clue what to do with, and the other was a dream come true.
If you or anyone else you know needs a faceup, please get in touch through my contact form or Instagram! I enjoy working with clients and I have a quick turnaround time, especially when I have nothing on my plate.
But anyway, in December I painted a modded April Story Juliet and a Fairyland MNF Ryeon. Without further ado, onto the pictures and rambling under the break!
First up is the April Story Juliet in white skin with an eye opening mod by a previous owner. This doll, hoo boy, is janky, but that is generally April Story engineering. First things first, I took her apart, restrung her, rewired her, sueded her hips and ankles with hot glue.
Despite all that, she still refuses to stand for longer than 10 seconds by herself. So she gets to exist as primarily a shelf doll (even though she doesn't sit upright either).
Here's a before and after comparison with her previous to her current faceup:
She had a faceup by another local friend and faceup artist, which was beautifully done, but as I bond with my dolls through the customization process, it had to go. Their faceups are very durable, so I literally had to stick the head into a jar of 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and soak it for an hour before she gave it up.
Again, the old faceup was beautiful and well done, but I like my dolls to look softer than that. I knew I wanted some sort of fantasy aspect on her, so I used some Coliro Pearlcolors to paint some designs on her.
It was very difficult for me to pin down what to paint, and I kept having to clean off the fantasy elements until I got to here. Now I'm happy with her, despite her refusal to stand on her own.
Then here we have my Fairyland MNF Ryeon in natural skin. She is an old gal, from about 2010, and I am so stoked to have one back in my collection. I used to own one a long time ago, which I had to sell in 2014/15 due to bills and she sold the fastest.
To this day I regret selling her, but now I have one back, even from the same year as mine was, and I'm really enjoying her.
I repainted her similarly to my last one, but with obviously more skill than back then. I will dig out a picture or two or her old look! But first, let's compare her to her previous faceup by the same local artist as with the previous doll I posted:
Again, it is beautifully done, I really love how they do eyebrows and eye details, they do bold looks really great. Though again, I wanted something softer for her and with fantasy elements as she's not meant to be human. I really did enjoy doing the swirls on her face!
Next let me share the faceup I'd done on my previous Ryeon:
This faceup is from 10 years ago, completed in early April of 2014. It was faceup #122 (the new one is #608), and it's so great to see my progress of the last 10 years!
I'm still in the process of customizing her current shell, as I sold everything after selling her. Luckily the friend I bought her from included a bunch of MNF clothing as she was their last MNF. So now I got lots of options to dress her with!
Currently I am working on refining the ears I sculpted out of Apoxie Sculpt, but I am happy with their shape so far. I also made her a posable tail out of wire, masking tape, magnets, and some fake fur. It's very light and does lots of cute poses!
I'm pondering making a tutorial on how to make posable fabric tails for dolls, since I feel like I figured out a good method for it (I've made lots of lion and unicorn tails the last couple of years for my dolls), and I wouldn't mind sharing what I know!
Anyhow, time to get back to sanding the ears, and then finally paint the insides of them pink. Maybe I'll redo one more doll of mine as well, who's had the same faceup since 2015. She could do with a refresher too...
Until next time!!
