Since I currently have nothing to work on commission wise, I decided to whip up a natural girl face up tutorial for the site There be Dolls. It shows my method of working, and isn't the only method. I meant it as more of a starting point for people to do their own natural face ups. I'll later probably do a tutorial on how to apply eyelashes to dolls as it seems to me a lot of people struggle with it. I've made one in the past for DoA, but I wanted to do it again with new pictures. Either way, please go on and check out this tutorial! I might even finally continue on my face up guide book. I really need to finish that poor thing... It's not like I don't have time now! Also, I'm still open for commission! Please don't hesitate to send me a message on my contact page! I'm happy to work on all legit dolls.
That's all from me for now. Until next time!

Since I have nothing to work on currently, I decided to paint one of my spare heads, a Dollzone Minas in normal skin pink. I've had this head in a drawer since 2016 and never bothered to do anything with it. I decided to give her a nice natural face up to list her for sale. A close friend of mine already snatched her up! Without further ado, onto some pictures! I'm really happy with how the face up turned out, and I tried out some of the lashes I got ages ago. They are huge, probably too big for any sculpt with eye sizes below 18mm! Minas takes 16mm eyes and they are gigantic on her, but not terribly so. I love how her lips came out. In the Dollzone promo pictures she has really dark red painted lips. It's pretty, but I feel it overpowers the sculpt a bit.
Now for the news! I wanted to give a shout out to legit BJD interview blog called There Be Dolls! It has artist interviews, tutorials, and you can sign up as a member and send comments to others on there. It's run by a local collector here, and I can't wait to read the next interviews! That's all from me for now, until next time! Sorry for the month long silence you guys, I haven't forgotten to work on commissions! I did get a bunch of them done, but not all of them are documented yet. I will post the two that I do have documentation for though! I worked on a Fairylanf RealFee Sira (not documented yet), a Dollzone Eudora, and Volks DDH-04. I'm also open for commissions, though I already have a bunch again! I'm expecting two more commissions within this week. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up is the Dollzone Eudora in white skin. What an odd, but cute little creature she is. The client asked for blue and purple tiger stripes along her head and body. She was a lot of fun to work on! Then here we have the Volks DDH-04 head in normal skin. She had a face up when she arrived to me, but it came off easily enough. This is only my third time doing an anime style face up. I'm proud of it even if I still have a lot to learn with them! She's meant to look like Yuzuki from Chobits.
Either way, I have one more Volks Dollfie Dream head to paint for that client, and then I'll be tackling the Luts dolls I get to work on. Until next time! I just had a super busy weekend working on personal projects as I was waiting on some more commissions to come in. On Friday I finally got around to blushing my Dollzone Sawarieda body (it has a DZ Minas head). I'm sadly not done yet, but I'm happy with where I did stop. Then on Sunday I worked on my Impldoll Azalea elf that just arrived on Saturday. I did a quick face up on her in the morning as there was a doll meet the same day. I don't have the best pictures of the Sawarieda body blushing, but I have some I'd like to show! Mainly what is left to do is add scales to all her tail petals. It's going to take forever but it'll be totally worth it! Now for the Impldoll Azalea elf in real skin. She represents one of my oldest characters who I've had running around in my head and writing since I was 14 years old. Without further ado, have some pictures! I had a lot of fun with her scars, I always forget how much I enjoy doing them on dolls. She initially fought me on the placement of them, but once I got them "right" everything else was smooth sailing. I'm very happy that I was able to paint her so quickly and still have it look nice.
Now to focus on commissions again. Until next time! I did it guys, I reached my goal of 250 completed face ups! And it was on one of my own dolls, my Dollzone Chen in normal yellow skin. I'm so thrilled that I reached this milestone as I've been a face up artist for about 4.5 years at this point. I've grown so much in this craft, it's amazing to look back. Anyway, let's get to the pictures! I like his eyebrows much better again this time around than last. Last time they were so... expressionless? I'm also much more pleased with his blushing. He looks like he's rolling his eyes, that was not intentional. It's kind of funny how his color seems to be different in each photo, but I promise it's the same head each time! He's on his 4th face up, and it's my favorite so far! Since I reached a milestone, it's time to post my collage again! It's been a while since I've posted my face up collage. It's gotten quite massive at this point! My poor photoshop file takes forever to open! One day I swear I should print it as a blanket or something, not like that'd be creepy or anything to have a blanket of a bunch of heads!
Anyway, I'm expecting some more commissions soon so there'll be lots of new work again! Until next time! I actually finished and posted this one a few days ago, but I haven't gotten around to making a blog post yet, oops! Either way, I got to work on a Dollzone Vita in white skin. Next I will have to do her body, and the Doll Chateau Jakov's as well. My wife and I have been spring cleaning a lot so face ups have been difficult to do. We're almost done though, only the kitchen is left! Without further ado, detail shots! She's such a grumpy face. Reminds me a bit of my evil ballet teacher from when I was 11 years old. Either way, this girl is prettier than her.
Yesterday after my step grandma's funeral I decided to wind down by doing a face up. This one is for a friend on her Dollzone Mini Scarecrow Hal in normal pink. She'll be picking her up in person this Sunday, so no need for postage! The Dollzone tiny body is really good at holding poses. I was experimenting a bit to see how flexible it really is. Found out she can stand on one foot without sueding or wiring! Anyway, onto some pictures! It's kind of funny, almost every face up I've done for this friend (who I adore dearly) she's requested freckles on it. Not that I mind, I love doing freckles, it's just something I noticed. Isn't she a cutie? Excuse the crappy cell phone photo, but I was quite proud of this pose for her!
In other news, I received a large multi-part commission from a client that had her dolls sent to me directly from Luts. I look forward to working on them too! I just got home from celebrating easter with my wife and my family, and it was quite lovely. We created a giant photo collage to commemorate my late step grandma who just passed away this week. The funeral is on Wednesday, so I took that day off from all work. In happier news, I did get around to painting my giant mermaid girl from Dollzone. She's a hybrid with a Minas head on a Sawarieda body. I painted her yesterday in the morning, but didn't get around to documenting her until today. She turned out quite pretty in my opinion, though I'm not entirely sold on the teeth on this sculpt. I normally dislike my dolls having teeth, but this was the only head I liked from DZ when I ordered the Sawarieda within a week of her release. I'm still sad that Dollzone discontinued all of their old dolls... Anyway, I'll eventually blush her body too, but that's going to be quite the under taking! I'm going to buy alternative sealant like Purity Seal or Army Painter Matte Varnish to do it with so I can save my MSC for face ups. Here's a picture of her currently taken last night with my cell phone. She's a massive doll and doesn't even fit on my work desk. I dread taking her apart for blushing! Her name is Sam, and she's my siren character. I'm tempted down the line when I eventually repaint her to mod her little buck teeth to pointed and give her long fin like ears!
Either way, happy easter! It was a busy weekend for me! I did 2 face ups, not quite as many as I hoped to do, but I had friends come over so my time was a little limited, but I still dented my commission list and even did one for myself! First up we have a Fairyland MNF Luka in natural skin with light freckles, light cat's eyeliner, but otherwise natural. I'm really proud of her eyelashes. She's also my 220th face up to date! Then here we have one I did for myself on my new girl, a Dollzone Moon in normal yellow skin. I wanted her to be mostly natural looking with some light fantasy aspects, such as the scales along her eyes. She is a dragon after all. I made the eyes myself, along with her wig. Here she is all put together! I still need to take some pictures of her in actual daylight. Soon!
January 2016 was a good month for doing face ups, I did a 6 face ups! That is quite a bit considering I couldn't do any for about 1-2 weeks at one point because of scheduling conflicts with my jobs. This week I'm hoping to tackle the 3 part commission I got and get that one done too. If I can't do it before the weekend not the end of the world, but I'll try regardless! I feel like I'm on a roll! ... also known as a Dollzone Big Dipper belonging to my fiancee. He will eventually get a matching body blush, but for now I did his head. Anyway, onto some pictures! She asked me to paint him like a head of cabbage and sent me a bunch of reference shots of cabbages. It was rather interesting doing this face up, and very relaxing. The eyes are positioned like that on purpose as he is a huge derp, and an alchemy experiment gone wrong.
I've been a busy bee since I last posted. I got a new job that I started on Monday, so I was finally able to quit my old one. That also means that I'll be able to take on more commissions now than just 5 slots as I work now part time. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up is a Resinsoul An in white skin. I'm getting better and better at doing blushing on white skin dolls without making them look normal skin! And then, part of the same order as the Resinsoul An, are some Dollmore parts. Kid Dollpire hands along with Small Kitty Ears. And then here we have a super cutie, a Dollzone Finggo I recieved in an order and simply didn't bond so I sold her. The buyer wanted me to paint her as a blue rose. Head is done, now I just need to get to her little body.
This face up also marks my 190th one! WOO!! Finally managed to document the Dollzone Wendy and I completed another face up yesterday. I was going to face up this morning, but I was too tired. I'll work on some this evening when I get off work. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up are the details shots of the Dollzone Wendy in white skin. It's always a fun challenge putting a manicure on those tiny hands. Then here we have an Impldoll Tony in normal pink skin. He looks nothing like the old Impldoll sculpts. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just interesting!
I've been a busy bee at work and at home, so I don't have too much to show so far this week. But the weather's been nice so I can work in the mornings on face ups. Without further delay, here's a small preview of what I finished yesterday. She is a Dollzone Wendy on the human body I'm glad I got to work on one of these too because I was torn between getting a Wendy or a Dale. I got a Dale in the end, even if both are cute as a button.
I also got a few more commissions to do now (Resinsoul Mei and 3 Dollzone Special Dales), but I'm going to work on some others first since they were last to arrive. Either way, my plate sure is full! I did a face up yesterday and today, and they are posted to the examples page, I just haven't posted a blog post with them yet. Bad me! Anyway, I redid my Dollzone Miss Kitty and Dollzone Chen's face up in the last two days. Neither changed much, they are mostly just redos for the characters just to update the technique. Both turned out lovely, though with the DZ Chen I tried applied eyelashes and after about 2 hours decided to pull them off. Oh well, Val just isn't the lashy kinda guy. First up is my Dollzone Miss Kitty who I repainted yesterday. She's my always concerned little lion girl who is actually on a DC K-01 body with Soom MD Cheshire paws. I also recently discovered she likes to wear pants. Who knew? Then we have my Dollzone Chen, who's been in my collection for a good 3.5 years. He was originally my third face up, then my 38th, and now my 171st. I actually have pulled off the eyelashes at this point but didn't retake the pictures. He simply looks better without them... That's it for now of my own crew. With March right around the corner it's time to work on commissions again. This time off has been very refreshing and it was nice being able to redo a few of my own dolls.
Yesterday morning I redid my Dollzone Stramonium's face up, which was really interesting to see for me because the first face up I did on her in December of 2013 was the first one I did using a brush for detailing rather than pencils. I've improved on that technique so much at this point. Anyway, onto some pictures! Here are my girl's detail shots. Her old face up was simply too plain for my infamous pirate queen. I realized she likes to wear eyeshadow and winged eyeliner, but she's not one for lipstick. No time to reapply lipstick all day when running a ship, you know? Here's a comparison of all the face ups she's had. I got her second hand and that was the face up on the left she came with. It didn't suit my character at all. Then the middle is the one I gave her shortly after receiving her. Now the right is her current face up. I really love how her look has evolved, it's not that different from the second to the third, but it's still different enough for me. One last picture for the road so you guys can get an idea for how cool she really is. And yes, her eye really does glow red. It's from Ringdoll as is her cybernetic arm.
