I had a nice and productive weekend! I finished up two face ups (one I did twice because the sealant frosted and almost flaked the first time), and a body blush! The face ups are on an Orange Tea Dolls Olivka and Violka in dark tan. The body blush is a Luts Senior Delf girl body in light tan. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up is the Orange Tea Dolls Violka in dark tan. This is possibly the darkest resin I've worked on thus far (besides that little black cat). It was an interesting challenge to figure out the color palette for blushing. The client wanted natural face ups for both Violka and Olivka. Then next up we have the Olivka in dark tan. This one I had to do twice because my sealant frosted really bad on her and created weird spider web patterns. At least it was a natural face up and not a super detailed fantasy one. I haven't properly documented the body blush on the Luts Senior Delf girl body yet, but I will today. For now I just have some badly lit pictures on my desk. She's definitely a gorgeous one. I did the face up a little ways back, and worked back into it yesterday to pop the lips more. For the body I did freckles, blushing, and a french manicure. The client didn't want her feet blushed as she's intending to get her some high heeled feet down the line. Now to document everything properly once I find the time after work!
Also, I just need to gush about this, but I overshot my secondary goal for this year in face up milestones! My first was to get to 250 completed face ups total since starting to do them, and then my secondary goal was 275. I'm now at 276 completed face ups and it's only October! So far this year I've done 61 face ups (and some body blushes too, but I don't count those towards the face up collage). Usually I do on average 55 face ups a year, so I feel I'm doing quite well! I still have more to do before I re-open commissions again. That's it for now, until next time!

I've been a busy bee this past week with work, but I managed to get some new face ups and the such done! I'm hoping to work on even more today since it's the butt crack of dawn still, the whole day is still ahead of me! Without further ado, onto some pictures! First up is a friend's Fairyland MNF Rendia in tan skin. She is a sea witch, and I was given free reign on the lips, so I did a sea green fade. I felt natural lips would be a little bland. I always love working on this color resin, even if blushing sometimes is challenging. It's not often I get to apply piercings to dolls despite having all the resources for it. I also did a comparison to her default face up. It wasn't a bad face up at all, but I do feel that Fairyland put the eyebrows waaaay too high on it. My friend had added the piercings herself, which I copied over into the custom face up. Next up is the finally completed Doll Chateau Jakov for another friend. He was pretty much done, I just had to finish up his wings. He's a David Bowie tribute doll and is finally on his way back home to his owner. Safe travels, friend! This one is a Luts Senior Delf Isabella in tan skin. It is such a lovely color! I need to work back into her lips a little more and give them more definition. She's also getting a full body blush with freckles plus a french manicure. I'm hoping to work on that today in the afternoon!
That's all for now my friends, until next time! I finally was able to finish one of my more difficult commissions, lots of first things to be done for me as a face up artist with this one! The commission consisted of working on a Dollclans Vezeto in normal skin and an Iplehouse SID male torso in special real skin. The work that needed to be done was extensive. I had to mod the neck smaller by about 1.5cm (first neck mod ever for me), color match the head to the torso, blush the torso and paint body hair, and then finally also a face up on the head. The color match alone took me 3 days to do as I did it all with pastels. I sadly don't know how to use an airbrush. Either way, onto some pictures! First up is the head, he's quite a few shades darker now than when he came to me. I struggled with the color match because I started it too orange, so I kept on having to put layers of light blue over it to tone it down. It turned out a little dark, but it's much better than before I blushed him! In the last picture you can see his headcap as a comparison. Then here we have the body, or rather the torso of an Iplehouse SID male body in special real skin. The mod took quite a while to do too, and I had to use my dremel to get anywhere with it. Once I had it almost small enough I finished it off with sand paper. I spent roughly 3-4 hours on the body hair alone. This is only the second time I've done body hair so far! Entertainingly enough, both times the clients asked for unnatural colors; blue for the first one, and wine red for this one. And here we have the comparison of the head before and after color matching and face upping. What a difference! Here you can see that the head ended up being a little too dark, but I feel it's an acceptable difference. I definitely under charged for the color matching as I didn't realize how long and intensive it was going to be...
Anyway, I'm glad he's done! Now onto my next commissions! This weekend has been productive so far for me! I had a friend fly in from out of town on Wednesday and she just left this morning. I mostly ran around with her, but I did get to do two face ups as well as she wanted to see the process behind it. I worked on a three part commission (2 BJD heads plus a BJD pet). I managed to finish the two face ups, and then this week I'll be tackling the Paper Sakura Kazarai, who is black resin. The heads are a Souldoll Vito Han in sandy brown and a Fantasy Doll Charlotte in normal pink. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up is the Souldoll Han in sandy brown skin, which is quite a lovely light tan color. The eyebrows are not completely even on purpose. Then next up we have the Fantasy Doll Charlotte in normal pink. She's meant to be the daughter of the Han. Both were a lot of fun to work on. I just love doing freckles. Makes me wish more of my dolls had them, but they really don't. Currently only my doll Mel (DC Snow Nymph) has freckles in my collection. Oh well! Not the end of the world
Either way, I'm still waiting on a couple commissions to arrive. Right now I have about a week's time before I can accept anymore. That's all from me now! While being stuck at home in blizzard yesterday afternoon, I decided to spend my time productively and do a face up! I repainted a friend's LumeDoll Blaze in tan skin. For some reason his face up keeps chipping after a while, this is the third time I've painted him! The first time it peeled off because I worked in too humid conditions, the second time it took longer but I think I had a bad batch of sealant. Here's to hoping that this time the face up stays! Anyway, onto some pictures! These pictures do not show how tiny he actually is, which is why I have a picture of him in my hand as well (I have smallish hands being only 5'1" or 155cm tall). This is the best he's turned out so far! I also finally figured out how to do his eyebrows without making him look surprised, and I'm really proud of his beard too! And now for his two previous face ups! That's it from me for now! I'm steadily making my way through all the commissions I have currently.
This weekend was a busy one for me! I completed the face up I showed last time, and did a full one as well on top of it. The Doll in Mind Rain just got his last touches this morning (gloss) and he was approved fully as well so he's ready to go home. Then the other face up I did was on my wife's Luts HDF Centaur Madeleine in real skin brown. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up is the Doll in Mind Rain in normal skin. He was a very interesting face up for me to work on. Then here we have the Luts HDF Madeleine in real skin brown. We're still waiting on her proper wig to arrive, but it's in customs right now so it should be here by the end of the week! Entertainingly enough it'll get here right while my wife is out of state. Whoops!
As I mentioned in my last post, I got married this last weekend. It was a beautiful (and super short) ceremony. I'm the one in the dress and my wife is the one in the knickers and tailcoat. The weather was wonderful, even if I ended up with a migraine just about every day of the weekend. Anyway, now that the wedding is over and family members are back home, it was time to get back to work! What I worked on was a Bobobie/Resinsoul Ya dyed to be a lovely dark tan color. For this face up I was asked to basically combine two of my previous face ups. Dark eyebrows, black and white eyelashes, and white freckles along the eyes with natural lips.
That is all for now! I'm still waiting on a few more commissions to trickle in, but at least my new MSC is set to arrive today. Yesterday was a busy day for me! I worked on 3 heads, of which I completed 2 and the third is about halfway done. The top two are done, the bottom one is not but it's too humid this morning to face up and my back up place (old college) isn't open 'til noon today. That's where I was yesterday too, but after working from 9am to 3pm I realized I was very very hungry, so I had to stop for the day. This one is a Garden of Dolls Narah in light tan/coffee skin. It was interesting working on a sculpt with such prominent lips. I was asked to make her eyes look bigger and to give her freckles, the rest was up to me. She's a fawn and I'll be working on her body soon as well, just need to blush the hooves! I also realized when I was editing the pictures that she's derp eyed... oops! Then here we have another Resinsoul Mei, but this time in fleshtone and with a natural face up. Now I just need to restring her body as she's very floppy. It's kind of funny how both completed face ups from yesterday ended up with freckles.
Hopefully soon I'll be able to finish my own Fairyland LTF Juri 2013 faceplate (which I started yesterday). She's going to be a little half dragon girl and will be super cute (I hope) once done. That's all for now! Due to working two jobs and doing face ups as well, there's going to be some delays in getting the rest of my commissions taken care of. I'm very sorry for this! I usually just do part time hours at my morning job, but I worked full time shifts several times this week, and the days I didn't I was working at my afternoon job. That one I work at less frequently, maybe 2-3 times a week. I also work Saturday this week, giving me a 6 day work week. Next week I have to work both jobs every week day. Oof... that'll be rough. Anyway, I did manage to get one more face up done this week in the morning. It was a simple one so it went quick. I worked on a Soom FCE Thera in bronze skin. I just love the Soom bronze resin tone, it's such a lovely and rich color. I was asked to put white freckles on her, which proved to be tricky and took 2 tries, but in the end it worked out. I'm also really proud of her eyebrows!
This also marks my 199th face up, which means that now I'll have to redo Zephyra, my first resin doll, to mark the occasion of 200 face ups! She was my first and 100th, so it's only fitting she becomes my 200th one as well. Thank you for being so patient with me getting new work done slowly. You guys are really the best! Looks like I can only face up effectively on weekends now, still adjusting to my new job. Oh well, at least I can still do the things I love outside of work! Anyway, yesterday I worked on the Souldoll Vito Rouse in tan skin. My keywords for him were: sexy, stubble, manly. At one point I had to give him a shave and redo his stubble, but he looks pretty good right now. He was a lot of fun to work on, even though I had to redo his stubble after I sealed it. It wasn't too difficult at least. I love working on tan dolls, especially because there are so many different tans out there!
I should be able to work on another face up today even though I'll be a busy bee. I have to clean, then I'll go to Avengers Age of Ultron, and finally a doll meet again. Despite having to run around like a loon yesterday, I did manage to get two face ups done. One was on a Luts TDF Gelda Elf and the other on another Resinsoul Mei. Both turned out lovely in my opinion. Anyway, onto some pictures! First up we have the Luts Tiny Delf Gelda Elf in real skin brown. She is actually a centaur, so I'm going to have to blush her horse butt a bit to add white freckles to it. She also needs a better tail made out of mohair to match her synthetic mohair wig. A friend of mine commissioned me to re-paint her Resinsoul Mei after falling in love with the one I did for Anime Detour. She asked me to paint her along the same vein with applied pearls. I switched it up a bit as I do not copy face ups, not even my own, for different customers. Either way, I'm super pleased with how she turned out.
She's an old gal and has yellowed considerably. The Mei is also super floppy, so it was pretty amazing that I was able to get her to stand quite solid. That just shows how happy she is with her new look. Despite it being Easter this past weekend, I was still able to crank out a face up. I managed to paint a Luts Tiny Delf Dorothy Elf in real skin brown. She is so cute! One of her magnets had popped out so I glued that back in too. Anyway, onto some pictures! I'm glad I got to work on one of these cuties in this resin color because my fiancee will be getting a Luts Tiny Delf Centaur Gelda in the same color. This way I know that I can blush that resin nicely.
Through out this week I'll be chipping away at the rest of my commissions. I have a lot of them at this point. Yesterday morning I redid my Dollzone Stramonium's face up, which was really interesting to see for me because the first face up I did on her in December of 2013 was the first one I did using a brush for detailing rather than pencils. I've improved on that technique so much at this point. Anyway, onto some pictures! Here are my girl's detail shots. Her old face up was simply too plain for my infamous pirate queen. I realized she likes to wear eyeshadow and winged eyeliner, but she's not one for lipstick. No time to reapply lipstick all day when running a ship, you know? Here's a comparison of all the face ups she's had. I got her second hand and that was the face up on the left she came with. It didn't suit my character at all. Then the middle is the one I gave her shortly after receiving her. Now the right is her current face up. I really love how her look has evolved, it's not that different from the second to the third, but it's still different enough for me. One last picture for the road so you guys can get an idea for how cool she really is. And yes, her eye really does glow red. It's from Ringdoll as is her cybernetic arm.
I finally got around to redoing my Fairyland LTF Dark Elf Soo's face up in tan now that I'm taking a break to work on personal projects. Her old face up has bothered me just about since I put it on her, but I kept getting so many commissions that I didn't have time to redo hers. I still have a few more to reface up, but they will be dispersed throughout the week. If I feel up to it I might even do one tomorrow! Anyway, onto some pictures! I really love how her eyes came out. It took me roughly 20 minutes and about 5 tries to get the eyelashes to a point I liked them and NOT go too far on them. I kept overworking them badly... Either way I kept working on them and now she's quite dramatic, perfect for a pirate princess since her mother, my DZ Stramonium, is the pirate queen. Here's also a before and after picture of her two face ups. When I got her originally last summer she had a fairyland default face up, but I wiped it before I even took pictures of it. They had put so much silver shimmer on it that she looked like she was sweating. Just didn't work on the tan skin. I keep forgetting to put shimmer on Bonnie, maybe later I'll give her a layer of gold shimmer just to make her shine. Here's a picture of her all put together! She's such a cutie. Now I want to redo my DZ Stramonium to match.
Sorry about seemingly disappearing for a few weeks. I got sick for two weeks with what started as a cold and ended up as bronchitis. I'm finally better now and managed to squeeze out two more commissions for one person. The first is a Lillycat Ninon in caramel and the second is a Dollzone Freddy-2 with modded ears. I've always wanted to work on a Lillycat/Cerisedoll! Just need them approved and then I'll send the invoice and mail them back to their owner. These are probably the last face ups I'll complete before I fly to Florida for Christmas with my SO's family on Sunday.
On, and as a heads up, I'll be raising my prices in mid January by $5. Anyone that's contacted me so far will still get the current prices if I've given them estimates, so don't worry current customers! It's been about a year since I've raised my prices, but I feel I've improved enough to warrant it at this point. |
